Located on the northwest coast of Rhodes, the Ancient City of Kamiros is one of the island’s most fascinating and well-preserved archaeological sites. Unlike Lindos and Ialyssos, which were continuously inhabited or rebuilt, Kamiros was abandoned and left untouched for centuries, giving modern visitors a rare opportunity to explore a city frozen in time. Nestled on a hillside overlooking the Aegean Sea, the site reveals how advanced ancient urban planning was in the Hellenistic period, with organized streets, homes, temples, and water systems. Kamiros offers a deep connection to the daily life of its citizens and the natural beauty that once surrounded this vibrant community.

Historical Significance

Kamiros was founded around the 8th century BC and became one of the three powerful city-states of ancient Rhodes, alongside Ialyssos and Lindos. It reached its peak during the 6th and 5th centuries BC, known for its advanced urban planning, agriculture, and trade. A massive earthquake in 226 BC severely damaged the city, and although it was rebuilt, it never regained its former glory. Eventually, it was abandoned and buried until its rediscovery in the 19th century.

Site Layout and Highlights

The city was built in a terraced layout, with different functions on each level:

  • Acropolis (upper level): Remains of a temple dedicated to Athena, a stoa (covered walkway), and a large water reservoir system
  • Residential quarter (middle level): Grid-patterned houses with courtyards, showing advanced planning and drainage
  • Public buildings (lower level): Marketplace (agora), public baths, and a Doric fountain house

The structures are made of stone and still stand in impressive condition, surrounded by views of the Aegean Sea.
