Toroni is a quiet little village with a 2,5km sandy beach and transparent blue-green water ideal for chilling out and get rejuvenated. But apart from the relaxed atmosphere, Toroni is well known for its ancient city located up the mountain towards Porto Koufo.
It is believed that Toroni, the rocky peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. This was one of the most important cities in ancient Halkidiki, which was destroyed in the 6th century AD by the barbarians. There are few traces of prehistoric settlements that have been found here, too.
According to mythology Toroni was the wife of Proteas son of Poseidon. Her children got killed when they caused a battle with Hercules.
This seaside village has few facilities regarding accommodation options mostly studio & apartments and a few tavernas on the promenade. But don't miss the sunset, take a romantic walk along the beach before you head back.
Worth it to see
The second acropolis of Toroni stands on the Lykithos headland, the remains of which probably has been destroyed during the Ottoman occupation.
The early Christian temple dedicated to Agios Athanasios which was built in the 5th century. Especially, the mosaic of the middle nave which stands out.
