Mitsis Royal Mare

The Mitsis Royal Mare is a 5-star resort built on the Blue Flag beach of Anissaras, Hersonissos, Crete. There are 365 rooms, suites and bungalows, 7 restaurants, 4 bars, 29 secluded pools public and private.

The spacious, light-filled lobby has a Minoan feel to it, with the geometric designs on its polished creme-colored marble floor, polished golden marble columns, coffered ceilings- these are a classic architectural detail consisting of a series of rectangular, square, or octagonal grids in three-dimension sunken or recessed panels.

Continuing through the lobby, walking seaward, you pass through glass doors onto a pergola-shaded terrace with large planters full of decorative mediterranean shrubs and flowers and terminating in a low wall overlooking the central pool, grounds and bungalows of the resort, which slope down to the beach.

Descending the stairs from the terrace and continuing towards the beach, the grounds are lusciously landscaped, with over 500 mature palms, limestone planters containing shrubs and flowers, and limestone retaining walls. Walkways are pedestrian mall-wide, their gray pavers set with sky-blue and burnt orange tiles in pleasing geometric patterns, with buildings and bungalows on either side giving the appearance of a prosperous small town. Shops are housed in low, cut limestone buildings, which, along with the mature palms which make the environment look much older than it actually is (The resort was first opened in 1997).

The beach itself is one of the biggest draws for the resort. Anissaras Beach is an annual Blue Flag winner, which is an EU-designated award for clean water, and considered one of the best beaches in the area.

Because the distance from the edge of the resort to the sea’s edge is only a few meters, sun beds and umbrellas are all close to the water’s edge. The sand is soft and the color of brown sugar, and the seabed in places is a bit rocky. All in all, it’s a very pleasant, very quiet beach.

The Mitsis Royal Mare’s Mini Club means tons of fun for the little ones. There is a complete playground, supervised activities, a game room, and more to keep the kids happy and occupied.

Rooms

Rooms are furnished simply and elegantly, with earth tones predominating the décor. Furniture runs from comfy, well-upholstered beds and couches to wicker easy chairs and sun beds on the terraces or patios. Room amenities include, among others, coffee/tea facilities, daily replenished, fridge, furnished balcony, mini bar complimentary refreshment center include bottled wine, restocked every other day, bathrobe, towels, and slippers, magnifying mirror, shampoo, satellite TV and music channels, safe deposit box, welcome offer on arrival, and furnished balcony or terrace.

As far as views on offer, there are three, and they’re pretty straightforward. 1) Sea View. This is usually the most coveted view, with the wonderful wide horizon and the cerulean blue of the Med predominating the sight lines. 2) Side Sea View gives guests the best of both worlds, with a blended vista of the sea, the resort’s grounds, and the coastline. 3) Garden View emphasizes the beautifully designed and maintained grounds and pools with its mature palms, walkways and neighboring buildings.

Double Bungalows

Double Bungalows are available with each of the 3 views (Sea, Side Sea, Garden) and a 4^th and 5^th choice, Double Bungalow Sharing Pool, and Garden View Customized for Mobility Needs

Double Bungalow Garden View has twin or double beds, tiled floors, some with designed patterns, teal or tan walls with darker brown trim, and simple, comfortable furnishings and beds. French doors lead to a tiled furnished patio with the landscaped garden just beyond the patio.

Double Bungalow Sea View is on a higher level and features a shaded, furnished balcony with a nice view of the sea.

Double Bungalow Side Sea View can be found on the second story and has a nice, small furnished balcony, giving guests a pleasant panorama of the grounds and the sea.

Double Bungalow Sharing Pool includes the added pleasure and convenience of a swimming pool shared with immediate neighbors, which increases the probability of having a pool to oneself, or at least with fewer fellow swimmers, if privacy is desired.

Double Bungalow Garden View Customized for Mobility Needs has the added advantage of custom hand-holds, wheelchair-convenient doors, and other amenities suitable for guests with mobility issues.

Superior Bungalows

Superior Bungalows offer 3 views; Garden View, Pool View and Sea View. Superior Bungalows are larger, with a more open floor plan.

Junior Suites

Junior Suites are large enough for 4 guests, and have 4 choices, all of which involve the distinguishing feature of the Junior Suites: a pool. Junior Suites have a large, open floor plan, an interesting textured ceiling, and dividers separating the living spaces.

The four choices for Junior Suites are Sharing Pool, Private Pool, Sea Front Sharing Pool, and Sea Front Private Pool.

Four guests are allowed, with a maximum of 3 adults.

Suites

Suites sleep up to four guests, and have two distinct living areas separated by open wall dividers. They come in 5 varieties, 4 of which offer pools.

The 5 different choices in Suites are Sharing Pool, Sea Front Sharing Pool, Private Pool, Sea Front Private Pooll, and Sea Front (no pool).

They sleep up to 4 guests, with a maximum of 3 adults.

Ambassador Suite Sea Front Private Pool

Ambassador Suite Sea Front Private Pool is a luxury accommodation close to the beach with two sleeping areas, lots of floor space, a sitting area, a writing desk nook, and a full bathtub and separate shower. It has a large pool. Part of the terrace is shaded by a pergola, with additional terrace space in the sun and furnished with sun beds.

Presidential Suite Sea Front Private Pool

Presidential Suite Sea Front Private Pool is Mitsis Royal Mare’s best accommodation. It has large seaside pool, a patio that wraps around the entire pool, shaded seating on the patio as well as sun beds, wooden flooring on the interior, textured ceiling, two sleeping areas, a bath and separate walk-in shower, and the beach just a few steps away.

Sleeps 6, with 4 adults maximum.

Food and Drink

Mitsis Royal Mare offers 7 restaurants and 4 bars for guests’ dining and drinking pleasure.

Symposio is the resort’s main restaurant. It has indoor and outdoor seating affording great views of the grounds and sea. Symposio features local and international cuisine, including such favorites as grilled meats and fish.

Mediterranean à la carte Candia also offers great views in its outdoor seating area which overlooks one of the resort’s many pools, with menu choices covering variations of traditional Mediterranean fare. Sample choices are beet root salad, grilled octopus, and chicken filet.

The Pan-Asian à la carte Royal Palm takes guests to the Far East. There guests can choose from different Asian dishes such as sushi and Fusion varieties such as chicken curry and crispy duck.

The beach restaurant à la carte Albatros puts guests close to the water’s edge on a pergola-shaded patio just a few steps away from the sounds and aromas of the beach.

Italian à la carte restaurant Allegro offers guests classic Italian fare such as pizza and a wide variety of pastas. There’s even a kid’s menu.

Continuing Mitsis Royal Mare’s gastronomical tour of the globe, the South American à la carte Pacifico restaurant offers a variety of dishes such as tostadas, slow-cooked pork knuckle, and braised beef.

For one’s sweet tooth, the creperie-gelateria Alegria offers crepes, waffles, ice cream and coffee at poolside. Tea Time is a small poolside shop offering an assortment of brewed drinking choices.

Bars

The main bar, Minos, overlooks the resort on the patio just off the Lobby.

Minos serves espresso, various coffees, soft drinks, teas, juices, and a wide range of alcoholic beverages, both local and international.

The Kalypso Pool Bar is a wonderful venue for refreshment and relaxation with the happy sounds of the activity at the pool provided a pleasant aural background. Cocktails, Spritzers, Mojitoes, Beer, wine, soft drinks and more can be had at poolside.

The Delfinia Pool Bar is another poolside place to slake one’s thirst. Guests can play one of the available games with the little ones as they sip their favorite beverage.

The beach bar Horizon is aptly named, as it affords guests a wide-open vista of the beach, the sea, and the horizon. It’s the best place to be as the sun goes down at the end of a busy day at the beach.

Spa and Wellness

The Royal Mare Thalasso Centre invites guests to an environment where they can relax, improve their physical and mental state, and feel clean, fresh and new. Body and face treatments are tailored to the individual after consultation, and then the Spa’s world class practitioners will go to work to transform guests into the best version of themselves.

There are holistic well-being experts who can advise and recommend dietary and fitness regimes which can be applied far after the holidays are over. Hydro jet baths, affusion massages, pedicures, marine mud body wraps, physiotherapy, back, neck, foot and whole body massages are just a few treatments on offer at the Royal Mare Thalasso Centre.

In addition, there is a fully equipped fitness center, allowing guests to enjoy their holiday without missing a beat on their fitness routine.
